This is less of a recipe and more of a checklist of what we need to pick up when we prepare smoked salmon and bagels. Our family serves this on Christmas morning, but in our version, we've taken the liberty to add a few additional ingredients that we like. We spread out the ingredients similar to how Ina Garten does on her cooking show.
1
Prep all the produce. The lemon, cucumber, red onion, jalapeños, and tomatoes can be processed in advance.
2
Pull out the cream cheese prior to serving time so that it can soften. Wash and prep an optional bowl using radiccio for serving the cream cheese.
3
Assemble a spread with all the produce and smoked salmon. Add the capers and basil.
4
Toast the bagels then top with everything.
notes
To make the herringbone pattern with the smoked salmon, pull an individual piece and fold it in half. Lay it down on the platter with the folded end facing in. Repeat with another piece of smoked salmon, orienting it opposite of the piece on the platter. Repeat and alternate sides.

Not only is the herringbone pattern beautiful, but it's also functional. It makes it super easy for your guests to pick up whole slices of smoked salmon for their bagels.
